   The UConn men’s basketball team won a hard fought victory Sunday afternoon in Storrs against a University of Florida squad that entered the skirmish ranked #15 in the country. It was UConn’s first win at Gampel Pavilion over a ranked team in six years. UConn head coach Dan Hurley said, “Our guys showed an incredible will to win.”

   UConn is now 2-1 on the young season, and hope and optimism has returned to UConn men’s basketball.

UConn guard Alterique Gilbert played 36 minutes and scored 10 points.

UConn played tough defense against Florida and were inspired by a raucous crowd inside Gampel Pavilion.

UConn is young and athletic and outhustled Florida during the game.

UConn player Akok Akok was born in the Sudan and moved to New Hampshire when he was 3 years old. A walk-on player last January he played 30 minutes and ripped down 8 rebounds against the Gators.

UConn hasn’t returned (yet) to the pinnacle of college hoops, but yesterday’s rousing win was a bold step forward.
