The Bellwether College Consortium has named NVCC’s Allied Health and Nursing Program a top 10 Bellwether Award Finalist in the category of Instructional Programs & Services. One of 30 community colleges among three categories, NVCC will compete for the top Bellwether Award at the 2021 Virtual Community College Futures Assembly in January.
STEM faculty & staff at NVCC hosted a week-long orientation event for the College’s new NViSION STEM Scholars. The first day of the week-long orientation was an on-campus meeting. Activities for the rest of the orientation week were conducted virtually.
Naugatuck Valley Community College CEO, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D., faculty, and staff welcomed two cohorts of Advanced Manufacturing Technology students back to campus for the fall semester. CEO Dresdner expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity this program represents: “We’re excited to welcome you to NVCC and into the Advanced Manufacturing Technology program, because it represents so much potential not only for you, but also for our communities when you enter the workforce!”
“There is something about a garden” many a phrase would begin, and so there is. Commenting on the gardens at NVCC, President Daisy Cocco De Filippis wrote. “The Gardens of Naugatuck Valley Community College are, above all, microcosms of the values we hold dear as an institution. Cultivated through many hours of hard work and labor, the Gardens are a product of intense study, understanding and application of theories learned. They are teaching laboratories that are open, transparent and beautiful and contribute much to make our College a humane and learned institution. Some have been built to support a particular horticultural concept, others to more closely examine plant species and three have been created in loving memory of colleagues past.”
Naugatuck Valley Community College has been awarded a grant in the amount of $150,000 by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education for the Promoting Academically Successful Students (PASS) program. PASS is a new initiative of the Minority Advancement Program (MAP) to address students of color who are placed on academic probation and need additional support to redress their academic standing. A successful student of the PASS program will develop sustainable skills to remain on track to graduation and be removed from academic probation.
Two students from the Advanced Manufacturing Technology program at NVCC shared their stories at the Appropriations Committee Public Hearing on the Governor's FY21 Budget Adjustments for the State's Higher Education Agencies. Their presentations were coordinated by NVCC and the offices of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) as part of a community colleges’ manufacturing student panel. The students credited the manufacturing program with giving them a new start with no debt.
Naugatuck Valley Community College Alumnus, Marquis Harris, graduated with an A.A. in liberal arts and science in May 2019. A 2016 graduate of Wilby High School, Marquis chose NVCC because it was affordable and he did not know what he wanted to do, at the time.
Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Center for Job Placement and College Opportunities (CJPCO) will be hosting its annual student and alumni Job and Career Fair on Thursday April, 11 2019. The Job and Career Fair will be held in Café West on NVCC’s Waterbury campus from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. A total of 40 area employers will be attending the fair this year. Employers will be searching for students and alumni for both job and internship opportunities.
Connecticut’s Office of Higher Education (OHE) awarded NVCC a $75,000 grant, the maximum amount possible, as part of its Minority Advancement Program (MAP). MAP, which was created in 1983 in state statute, was originally intended to help Connecticut colleges and universities recruit, enroll, and retain minority students. Currently, the focus has shifted to improving the retention and graduation rates of minority students at the State’s colleges and universities. Recent trends in completion outcomes for NVCC students who identify as "non-white" are a significant reason why the college was selected for the grant. A 2013 cohort of students who identified as non-white at NVCC showed a 10% graduation rate within three years. A 2014 cohort had a graduation rate of 12% within three years, showing a 2 percentage point increase in completions.
