Waterbury Police have completed the investigation into last night’s suspicious items/ explosive devices investigation that occurred right outside the PD. At around 7:45 pm a male complainant came to the front desk saying that he had found two possible pipe bombs in a backpack left behind by one of his employees and that the backpack was on the sidewalk outside the PD.
The area was immediately cordoned off and pedestrian and vehicular traffic was detoured. A nearby house was evacuated. The PD was not evacuated and continued to fully operate, but internal precautions were taken including moving people within the PD from the east to west side of the building.
The State Police bomb squad responded and it was determined that the backpack contained two suspicious items which were neutralized through a controlled detonation using water. The investigation determined that the backpack belonged to Michael Dube (11/21/1992) of 135 May Street 2nd floor, Naugatuck CT.
Dube worked for the complainant as a door to door vacuum salesman. Dube was located and admitted to making two bombs and carrying them around in his backpack. Dube made the bombs by placing powder from fireworks in cardboard cylinders and wrapping them in duct tape. Dube was charged with Illegal Possession of Explosives, Manufacture of Bombs, and Reckless Endangerment 1st.
He is being held on $250,000 bond at the Waterbury Police Department and will appear in court on Monday morning. A search warrant was executed at Dube’s residence, but nothing more was found.
