State Representative  Larry B. Butler (D-Waterbury) recently helped deliver meals to homebound older adults in Waterbury.    New Opportunities Meals on Wheels sponsored “Mayors Deliver Meals Day” (March 20th) to provide seniors who are trying to maintain their independence in their own home a healthy meal.

“It was both enlightening and rewarding to participate in this program. While I enjoyed taking the time to help deliver meals, I believe the real focus should be on those receiving the meals and those that deliver the meals on a daily basis,” said Rep. Butler. “The driver I accompanied was Robert Elliott, who is a friend, but more than that he impressed me with the professionalism and dedication he displayed. It was apparent he really cared for the people to whom he delivered meals.”

Mayors Deliver Meals Day was created to educate elected officials, service providers, business leaders and the general public about the nutritional and social benefits of these meal services which are funded by the federal Older Americans Act, State of Connecticut, local community partners and donations.

“The greatest benefit to me was meeting the people receiving the meals. Some even waited outside of their units in anticipation of the meals,” said Rep. Butler.   “The last man we delivered to that day summed it up the best. He said if these meals weren’t delivered to him he would never be able the buy these meals for himself!”
