The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Connecticut in Waterbury – partnering with the AARP’s Driver Safety Program – will offer Driver Safety Courses in the upcoming session. The date of the course to be held at the Waterbury campus is Monday, November 12  (no course on Nov. 2) from 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM in the multi-purpose room, room #119, on the first floor.  Veterans signing up for the November AARP course can attend for free.

 To receive a certificate, you must attend one of the 4 ½ hour classes. Fees are payable on the first day of class in the classroom. Cost is $12 for AARP Members (you must bring check and your membership card to the first class) and $14 for Non-AARP members. OLLI membership is not required to register.

 AARP’s Driver Safety Program began more than thirty years ago and has since provided instruction to more than 12 million drivers nationally, and more than 250,000 in Connecticut, seeking to refresh their driving skills.  Thanks to legislation passed in 2008, those aged 60 and older completing the course in Connecticut are now eligible to receive a mandatory five percent discount on their auto liability insurance.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to educate participants about how best to reduce traffic violations, crashes and chances for injuries; update drivers’ knowledge of relevant laws; and provide safe driving strategies to compensate for age-related changes that affect one’s driving ability. The 4 ½ hour course offers drivers:
       –  Important strategies for staying crash-free;

       –  Insight into the challenges of city versus suburban driving;

       –  Tips for highway driving and driving with trucks, buses and large vehicles;

       –  Suggestions for handling aggressive drivers; and

       –  Signs to help measure one’s unsafe driving habits.

The AARP Driver Safety Program offers more than 700 classes annually to about 14,000 participants in over 50 cities and towns throughout Connecticut taught by a group of 150 volunteers.  Please register for the UConn Waterbury classes by calling 203-236-9924 or email osher@uconn.edu
