Dr. Amir H. Nadimi, DC, MS, CCSP, FCAMI offers two special, advanced techniques at his practice, Advanced Spine and Sports Care, in Wolcott.  One technique is especially effective for those who are seeking help with pain management and relief, and the second is for athletes who are interested in optimal sports performance.
The Graston Technique employs stainless steel instruments that a practitioner rubs against the patient using very specific methods.  It is a simple manual therapy although it does require fairly extensive training and special tools.  Dr. Nadimi joins a growing number of osteopathic physicians, chiropractors, athletic trainers, physical therapists and occupational therapists in using this treatment method.
The technique works by stretching connective tissue and muscle fibers and by separating and breaking down scar tissue.  It is similar to massage and it increases blood flow in and around the injured area and promotes the healing process.  The Graston Technique has a high success rate for patients with chronic pain or acute pain from soft tissue injuries.

Dr. Nadimi also works with athletes and active, sports-minded patients by instructing them on the proper use and application of the Kinesio® Taping Method.  Kinesio® tape was developed in the 1970s and became very popular after many athletes used it in the 2008 Olympics; it was very prevalent at the 2012 Olympics.  The bright colored tape is made of cotton fibers with elastic strands woven in.  Unlike traditional tape, Kinesio® Tape is pliable which allows for a full range of motion.

When properly applied, the tape offers structural or muscle support; can correct posture or joint problems; can increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage; and it takes pressure off swollen or injured muscles which allows for smooth muscle movement.  It can also be used to relax overused muscles (in therapy) and facilitate underused muscles (in rehabilitation).
