by Isabel Wilkerson
Monday, September 10, 2012  –  6:00 p.m.

Pulitzer Prize–winning author  Isabel Wilkerson  chronicles the migration of almost 6,000,000 black citizens who, in search of a better life, fled the South for
northern and western cities between 1915 and 1970.  She researched official re-cords and interviewed more than 1,000 people to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of  how these American journeys unfolded,  altering our cities, our country, and ourselves. This book is destined to become a classic.

Wilkerson highlights the lives of:
Ida Mae Gladney: left  Mississippi sharecropping in 1937 for  blue-collar work in Chicago
George Starling: fled Florida for Harlem in 1945 and endangered his new job fighting for civil rights
Robert Foster: left Louisiana in 1953 for a medical career and became Ray Charles’ personal physician
