On Sunday, April 29 at 3:00 pm, teacher and historian Peter Vermilyea will discuss Litchfield County’s Wadhams family and their Civil War legacy in a lecture at the Litchfield History Museum.
Litchfield was not immune from the drama and tragedy that befell so many American communities during the Civil War. Vermilyea will share the experience of the three Wadhams brothers from Litchfield County from their enlistment in the Union Army to the battlefields of Virginia. As we commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the Wadhams’s story illuminates the experiences and sacrifices of Northern families during that struggle.
Peter Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, CT and at Western Connecticut State University. He was recognized as Connecticut’s History Teacher of the Year. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he is the director of the scholarship program at his alma mater’s Civil War Institiute, and editor of its blog, “901 Stories from Gettysburg.” He is the author or editor of three books and more than a dozen articles, most on Civil War history.
