Congressional candidate and Former State Representative, Elizabeth Esty visited the headquarters of New Opportunities Inc. in Waterbury today, where she was hosted by the organization’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. James Gatling. New Opportunities Inc. is a community action agency offering a variety of social service programs designed to increase self-sufficiency and help lift people out of poverty.
During her visit, Esty held a meeting with Dr. Gatling and the New Opportunities staff, where they discussed the benefits of partnerships between government and community organizations followed by a tour of their Waterbury headquarters.
“Strong partnerships between the government and community organizations are essential to a prosperous future for northwest Connecticut,” Elizabeth Esty said. “New Opportunities does great work not just standing up on important issues like home heating oil assistance that too often are ignored in Washington, but by bringing non-profits and government together to help empower people to improve their lives. Community organizations often understand the needs of our friends, relatives, and neighbors in ways that Washington doesn’t, and often they’re the best situated to respond. In Congress, I will work to ensure that community organizations have a strong partner in the federal government, so everyone has the chance to lift themselves up and achieve the American dream.”
New Opportunities Inc. administers more than 70 social service programs targeted to the low-income, elderly, and disabled communities. They serve Waterbury, Meriden, Torrington, and 27 surrounding Connecticut towns and benefit more than 60,000 individuals every year in collaboration with hundreds of local, regional, and global groups.
Elizabeth Esty is a Democrat running for the open seat in Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District. Esty is a community leader, attorney, and mother who has earned a reputation as a tireless, progressive advocate for the middle class.
