Join the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury for a provocative and cutting edge cocktail party and exhibit on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 6:00-8:00pm. This one night only party, “Chrome & Couture, Say Yes to the Paper Dress,” will feature an exhibit of custom, vintage and exceptional motorcycles with an outrageous collection of paper dresses. This festive, interactive event will be enjoyed on all three floors of the museum and includes food sculptures, tattoo models, body art demonstrations, psychic readings and strolling tables. Yes, strolling tables.
Many of the jaw-dropping dresses featured in “The Paper Runway” competition at the 2011 National Stationary Show at the Javits Center in New York City will be on display (www.nationalstationeryshow.com). Students Alexis Michaelides and Margaret Carroll who attend The Laboratory Institute of Management won the competition for their design entitled “Feather Fantasy.” This winning design will be showcased at Kate’s Paperie during Fashion Week in September 2011 and at the “Chrome & Couture” party.
Professor Marjorie Lee Woo, advisor to the students participating in “The Paper Runway” competition, was the honored recipient of this year’s distinguished Teaching Excellence Award at LIM College. At the presentation of this honor, the Dean of Academic Affairs said “All who know her realize she wears many hats: educator, millinery designer, entrepreneur, and visual merchandiser”. Marjorie, owner of MARJORIE LEE WOO Fine Millinery, will also be contributing gorgeous paper dresses and headpieces of her own design to the show.

A collection of live mannequins in 1950’s paper dresses and live models by Trantolo & Trantolo and the Beauty Mark will be wearing the hottest paper ensembles and body art. Historical and outrageous paper dresses created by students from the Laboratory Institute of Management in midtown Manhattan will be on view. Exhibitors also include aspiring design students from Kaynor Tech Design Department. Visual artists Danielle Mailer, Hyun Joo Jung, Lisa Cruise, Katherine Freygang , whose works have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the country, will also be featured. Senior Editorial Stylist, Georgia Snowden of Adam Broderick Salon & Spa, will exhibit a collection of paper dresses inspired by the 1950’s including Marlyn Monroe, June Cleever, a sock hop, a car hop and a 1950’s hostess.
Danielle Mailer, a Connecticut based artist working in Litchfield County, has shown her work in numerous galleries in Connecticut and beyond. She has participated in many group exhibitions, two person shows and individual shows, including a show with the renowned kinetic sculptor Tim Prentice at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury CT in the spring of 2009. She also opened her own gallery in Goshen CT., “Danielle Mailer Gallery”, where she has an ongoing exhibit of her current work.
Lisa Cruse, a Litchfield County artist, is skilled in all sorts of fabric and thread manipulation, garment design and embellishments. She is currently a vendor, instructor and exhibitor at major sheep and wool shows in the New England area with a focus on knitted and fulled hats and felted embellishments. Her pieces may be found in private collections internationally. Katherine Freygang of Cromwell, CT creates media that describes balanced and creative relationships with the natural world. She artfully promotes health, education and creative problem solving, and currently focuses on energy conservation in towns and schools.
Hyun Joo Jung, originally from Seoul, Korea, has been exhibited nationwide. She is a Juried Artist member from Silvermine Guild Arts Center and a member of Westport Arts Center and was a recipient in the entry of Art of the Northeast (2006) and was invited to the Artists Residency Program at I-Park (2006, East Haddam). Her work has been reviewed by Korean Times, Cheshire Herald, Westportnow, and a number of paintings are in private collection in Connecticut, Illinois, New York and Virginia.
Mike D’Occhio of DOC’s Motorcycles in Waterbury, CT is excited to lend his expertise and bikes to the party. “We are combining history and elegance by showcasing motorcycles ranging from a 1941 military issued Indian to a modern day, custom built, 160 cubic inch street racer. Both are sure to turn heads for their nostalgic and modern day design features,” says Doc’s Vice President Mike “Doc” D’Occhio. From new state-of-the-art builds to antique bikes, Doc’s selection of motorcycles will get anyone’s heart pumping. Participants will almost be able to feel the wind in their hair just looking at the fast lines and beautifully detailed paint jobs. MAX BMW Motorcycles of Brookfield and other private lenders are also participating in the festivities and bringing amazing bikes to put on display in the Mattatuck Museum’s Whittemore Gallery.
