State Representative Larry Butler (D-Waterbury) has been appointed to serve as Deputy Speaker by Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz for the 2019 Legislative Session.

Butler, who has served Waterbury’s 72nd Assembly District in the CT General Assembly since 2006, has held other leadership positions including Chair of the legislature’s Housing Committee during his last 8 years of service.  He began serving in his new leadership role after being sworn in Wednesday during the opening of the new session.

"I'm extremely proud of the work and the housing policy accomplishments we were able to implement over the last several years as House Chair of the Housing Committee,” Rep. Butler said. “However, I am equally proud and excited to begin serving in this new capacity.”

In addition to his new role, Rep. Butler will continue to serve on the Housing Committee, the Human Services and the Joint Committee on Legislative Management.

Rep. Butler has always represented his constituents with great distinction and commitment,” Speaker Aresimowicz said. “I am pleased Larry accepted this new role in our leadership team and look forward to working together to help move our state forward.”

Butler noted, “As a Deputy Speaker, I will have more impact on proposals and policy measures being considered for all of the committees, and from time to time, I will preside over the entire House Chambers when the Speaker is unavailable. I am thankful to the Speaker for giving me this great opportunity and I look forward to serving with all my colleagues during this upcoming session."
