Recognition of Greenway Project Gives Rise to Sunday's Bike Event In Downtown Waterbury

Greater Waterbury YMCA executive director Jim O'Rourke will lead a group from the Y's triathalon club on a 50 mile ride along the Naugatuck River from Torrington to Derby. CITY HOSTS DAY OF FREEWHEELING FUN

   WHAT:  Waterbury on Wheels is a first-time event aimed at promoting bicycle use within the city of Waterbury for recreation, alternative transportation, and physical health.  The event is taking place in combination with the larger regional bike-a-thon called “Explore the Naugatuck” which celebrates the efforts of cities and towns along the Naugatuck River to build the Naugatuck River Greenway (NRG).  The greenway project was recently named as one of the country’s 100 best outdoor projects by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.

Celebrating The Revival Of The Naugatuck River

Colored dyes stained rivers throughout the industrial Northeast. By Lynn Cherry

   It was the best day the Naugtauck River has experienced in 100 years. The river received so much attention on February 24th that one could imagine her embarrassed, and blushing red for old time sake. This blush, however, was triggered by admirers gushing at her beauty, not from the red dyes that were pumped into her as industrial waste into a glorified toilet.
