   St. John’s Episcopal Church, Washington, Conn., will host an “Art for Haiti” event the weekend of September 9-11 that will raise funds to rebuild the Holy Trinity Cathedral complex in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

   When the devastating earthquake hit in January, 2010, nearly all the Church's churches, schools and community service centers, both in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere around Haiti were destroyed or suffered severe damage rendering them unusable. The Episcopal Diocese in Haiti is an important provider of health care and education services for the entire island.  The school and hospital, a part of the Cathedral complex, were among the buildings destroyed.

   “Art for Haiti” will be launched at a Preview Reception and Auction in St. John's parish house from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 with food, drinks and island music. Tickets for the Preview Reception are $20 and reservations are required.

   The exhibit and sale continue on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

   For this event, St. John’s is partnering with the Vassar Haiti Project, a volunteer group founded in 2001 by Vassar faculty and students, which through its commitment to promoting the work of Haitian painters, jewelers and craftsmen at art auctions and sales, has built and supports a primary school in remote Chermaitre, Haiti.
