Take Your Child to the Library Day
The Silas Bronson Library will be hosting a full day of fun activities on Saturday, February 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as part of Take Your Child to the Library Day. The library will be giving away 800 copies of the classic children’s book, “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” to all families visiting during the event. An ice sculptor will create a popular figure from children’s stories in front of the library starting at noon, and there will be fun activities in the Children’s Room all day, including green screen photography, story reading, and create-your-own-comic.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving granted the Connecticut State Library funds to distribute copies of “Harold and the Purple Crayon” to libraries statewide on behalf of an anonymous donor. 18,000 copies of this book were printed with a special dedication to the children of Connecticut and 800 of those copies will be given away to Waterbury children by the Silas Bronson Library. The goal is to get copies into the hands of children, especially those who are not likely to have many books in their homes.
Take Your Child to the Library Day was launched in 2011 as a grassroots literacy project in Connecticut. Created by Connecticut librarians Nadine Lipman and Caitlin Augusta with Connecticut children’s book illustrator/author Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, it has become an international celebration encouraging families everywhere to take their children to their local libraries.
