The late afternoon sun hovered above the Union Station clock tower yesterday in downtown Waterbury. The iconic tower was built in 1909 by the Seth Thomas Clock Company as a part of a massive railroad station. Fifty years later railroad service vanished from American life and the station was scheduled for demolition. The Republican-American newspaper stepped forward and purchased the building (legend says for $1) and moved their offices into the station. It is one of the most spectacular structures in New England.
